Antenna Discussion Board / 1/4 Wave GPA Antenna
« on: September 11, 2021, 12:54:15 pm »
Here's a few old photo's taken from my very first "Ground Plane Antenna" or GPA for short, which I built using an "S0239" and "Chop-Block" inserts. I featured this design some years ago on my very first YouTube channel. This particular method went viral, and was copied and demonstrated by many other YouTubes at the time.

Below are 2 GPA's for both 2m and 70cm.

215-0

By design it's increasable simple to make with just a few parts required. The final result is a very sturdy antenna for portable work.

The 70cm antenna has a very wide bandwidth when characterized on a "Vector Network Analyzer" or VNA for short. This was perfect for working on the PMR or 67cm band.

Here's a close-up of the "SO239" and "Chop-Block" inserts.

216-1

The main driven element and ground radials where cut and bent into shape with aluminum rod purchased from "Wickes" DIY store. I remember I had to rub the anodized lay off at the connecting ends, as this is non-conductive layer. However this is great for weather proofing, which will ultimately help in harsh outdoor conditions.

There are many online GPA calculations around, so anyone wishing to build one of these antennas shouldn't have much difficulty in doing so.

Nets & Skeds / [UK] Southern & South-East PMR Net - 67cms

Day: Monday
Time: 8pm
Channel: 14 / 446.16875 Mhz

Below statements provided from a quote by Mike 26CT1074.

The net has been running now for almost four years, and is based in East/West Sussex.

Initially, the net started on Channel 8 (unofficial 'calling' channel) but recently we moved the net to the higher frequencies of the PMR band and now its on Channel 14 (446.16875 MHz).

Due to the short range on PMR, there is a limit of distant stations but we have successfully worked in stations from Wiltshire/Hampshire/Isle of Wight/Berkshire/London/Middlesex/Essex/Surrey and Kent. When the Tropo is running good, we've worked in stations from France & Belgium too!

During the past year,  there is on average 18 stations calling into the net each Monday night.

Although that number lowers during the Winter months.

PMR Discussion Board / Armchair Copy
« on: September 09, 2021, 03:54:25 pm »
Had an excellent copy to Pete 26CT3855 a couple of weeks ago. Not exactly a mega DX copy, but still good for a small handheld using just the stock rubber duck antenna. I was located no more than a stones throw away from Maidstone Hospital, which is about 300 FT ASL.

Working conditions Kenwood TK-3107 which is up for sale.

PMR Discussion Board / PMR Frequencies
« on: September 09, 2021, 03:32:02 pm »
UK PMR Frequency allocations, with a brief summary on regulations and use:

167-0

Ofcom Regulations: Analogue and Digital PMR446 channels

Analogue PMR446 equipment has sixteen 12.5 kHz channels spaced equally between446.0 to 446.2 MHz.

Digital PMR446 equipment has sixteen 12.5 kHz channels and / or thirty-two 6.25 kHz channels. These channels are spaced equally between 446.0 to 446.2 MHz. As the thirty-two 6.25 kHz channels overlay the sixteen 12.5 kHz channels it is possible that operation nearby within one channel could cause harmful interference to another, e.g. transmissions within 6.25 kHz channels 1 & 2 could affect 12.5 kHz channel 1, and vice versa.

PMR446 Base Stations

Both Analogue and Digital PMR446 equipment must be used on a mobile basis only for it to meet the licence-exempt operation requirements within the UK.

Please note that PMR446 equipment that is designed for base station use, or mobile equipment that is configured as a base station, e.g. as an Internet Gateway, is unlikely to meet the licence exempt operation requirements.

Technical Corner / Re: Simple Digi-Vox Circuit
« on: September 08, 2021, 05:09:46 pm »
Finally finished the Digi-Vox unit which is fully compatible with all CB radios. The whole unit is constructed in true "Home-brew" fashion, which is obvious to see from the pictures below.

The only deviations from the original schematic above, is firstly the use of a rotary switch to select when operating in either Digital or Voice modes, this will make life much easier with not having to plug and un-plug the microphone and speaker every time you wish to switch.

All connections can be permanently attached, with the microphone being plugged into the front of the Digi-Vox, and external speaker being plugged in via the rear 3.5mm jack socket. The unit doesn't even need to be power if operating in Voice only.

Secondly as I used a "Double Pole / Double throw" relay, I was able to add Send / Receive LEDs on the front panel for TX/RX operation.

Front Panel. Showing all the controls for operating. Easily toggle between Voice or Digital via the rotary selector switch.

116-0

Rear Panel. Showing all input and output connections to your PC / Laptop sound card via the 3.5mm jack sockets. Also the main 6 pin aviation control socket to be connected to your CB radio.  A custom patch lead is required for the control socket as it carries all connections for the MIC, PTT, TX, RX and SPK. ( example to be posted soon ) Finally the last 3.5mm jack socket is used for an external speaker when operating in Voice Mode.

118-1

Inside View. A typical copper clad, hand etched track work using a Dremel. The final result is not the neatest, but certainly the quickest. Plus without the use of etching with chemicals etc.
